Albano Laziale (Amphitheater). A few kilometers from Rome, it is one of the most important centers of the Castelli Romani, very welcoming and frequented by both tourists and the citizens themselves. The origins of the city of Albano Laziale date back to the Paleolithic era and extended to the Neolithic. It takes its name from the place belonging to the territory of Alba Longa, where a villa of the emperor Domitian was built between Lake Albano and the Via Appia.
Within the confines of the Villa Settimo Severo he built a camp, which took the name of Castra Albana. Albano Laziale has been the Episcopal seat since the 5th century, it boasts monumental churches, sumptuous villas, Christian catacombs from the 4th century, a castle. The vast park of 28 hectares, dating back to the 16th century, is annexed to the palace, rich in a luxuriant mixed deciduous vegetation, archaeological finds, fountains and artifacts from the 17th century, the last fragment of the “nemus aricinum” consecrated to Diana. Norma and gardens of Ninfa
The town of Ninfa, whose name seems to derive from a temple of the classical age dedicated to the Nymphs, present on a small lake island, had to exist already during the Roman era, but it was a small agricultural center. During the mid-eighth century, Pope Zaccaria received a gift from Constantine V Copronymus, as a sign of gratitude for having opposed the advance of the Lombards by interceding with King Liutprando, vast agricultural areas near Norma, where there was a country estate [2]. In this period the Via Appia and the Via Severiana became impassable due to the progress of the swamp and this led to the displacement of commercial traffic on the piedmont road that passed near Ninfa: the imposition of a toll on anyone who wanted to use the road it turned out to be a source of wealth and soon Ninfa became a small urban center, with numerous houses and churches.
Ruins on the Ninfa river
In the 16th century Cardinal Nicolò III Caetani gave orders to the architect Francesco Capriani to build a garden in the Ninfa area, consisting simply of two avenues at right angles and two niches from which water flowed which then flowed into the river for trout farm: this garden fell into disrepair shortly after the cardinal’s death in 1585. In the eighteenth century of Ninfa there was no longer any trace after that even the last mill and the fulling closed. In 1765 the town hall was transformed into a barn by the Duke Francesco V and in the same period Pope Pius VI started a reclamation of the marshes but all ended in a stalemate.
The garden
The garden, of the size of eight hectares, is an English garden that houses over a thousand plants and is crossed by numerous streams of irrigation as well as by the river Ninfa: the river originates from the homonymous lake of nature resurgence and flow, up to the integral reclamation, for over 40 kilometers in the agro pontine in the first tract with the name Ninfa and then with the name Sisto, until it flows between Terracina and the Circeo; starting from the 30s the resurgence waters were however diverted, just south of the garden …

Anzio (Nero’s Villa)
Along the coastal strip of Anzio, there was the grandiose imperial villa of Nerone, starting from the tip of Capo d Anzio and via Furio Anziate for more than 800 meters towards the west up to the cape of the Arco Muto. At Anzio, as Tacitus reports, Nero was born, and perhaps for this reason he was chosen by the emperor to build there.
